Urban change does not just mean a new, modern landscape of highways, buildings and malls. It also involves transformation in people’s aspirations, identities and experiences. Even as new opportunities arise, new pressures, dangers and anxieties also affect the lives of people. In our project we want to pay attention to how women experience these changes in all areas of public and private life.
Among the questions we ask are: How do education and new employment prospects change the roles of men and women? How does migration in search of a better life and affluence affect women? How do women form new communities in Gurgaon? How are family relationships and ‘values’ changing? What are women’s experiences of dating and socialising? What social expectations and pressures do women need to manage? In what ways can the city and sometimes even the home feel unsafe or violent? How do women cope?
The aim of the project is to bring to light women’s experiences through academic writing, public media publications and films. We intend to make women’s views and experiences more widely known and understood in public debates, academic scholarship, policy circles as well as popular media.
The project began in early 2020, amidst the coronavirus pandemic. We worked both online (zoom, whatsapp) and in person (following social distancing protocol) to reach out to women to hear their views.
This research project is principally based at the University of Cambridge, UK, and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) of the UK. We are a team of sociologists, anthropologists, historians and filmmakers spread across Cambridge, Oxford, Kolkata, Delhi and Gurgaon, working together to study women’s lives in Gurgaon.
हम गुड़गाँव में तेज़ी से हो रहे शहरीकरण पर रिसर्च कर रहे हैं, जिसे हम महिलाएं और उनके जीवन पर पड़े प्रभाव के ज़रिए समझना चाहते हैं। शहरीकरण से केवल सड़कें, हाईवे या शॉपिंग मॉल में बदलाव नहीं आता। इसका असर लोगों के विचारों, आकांक्षाओं और उनकी पहचान पर भी पढ़ता है, जो उतने ही ज़रूरी हैं। बदलते शहर के साथ नए अवसर और नई आशाएं तो बंधती ही हैं,साथ ही साथ जुड़ती हैं नई आशंकाएं, नए प्रकार के डर और नई उलझनें। हम अपने रिसर्च के माध्यम से जानने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं कि महिलाएं अपने निजी और सार्वजनिक जीवन में इन परिवर्तनों को कैसे अनुभव करती हैं।
शिक्षा और रोज़गार क्षेत्र में आने वाले विकास और नई संभावनाओं से समाज में पुरुषों और महिलाओं की भूमिका कैसे बदलती है? बेहतर जीवन की तलाश में दूसरी जगहों से आई महिलाएं गुड़गाँव को किस तरह अनुभव करती हैं? बढ़ती आमदनी और रहन-सहन के तरीकों का असर महिलाओं पर क्या है? पारिवारिक रिशतें, नैतिकताऐं और उनका महत्व किस प्रकार बदल रहा है? गुड़गाँव में रह रही महिलाएं आपस में कैसे घुलती-मिलती हैं? यहाँ नए दोस्त कैसे बनते हैं? किस तरह लोग प्यार ढूंढते और निभाते हैं? समाज औरतों से क्या अपेक्षाएं और रखता है और उन पे क्या रोक-टोक लगाता है? वो क्या कारण हैं जिनकी वजह से महिलायें शहर, और कई बार अपने घरों में भी, हिंसा का सामना करती हैं या असुरक्षित महसूस करती हैं? और किस तरह महिलाएं इन सब से हर दिन जूझती हैं?
हमारे रिसर्च का उदेश्य लेखन और प्रकाशनों के माध्यम से महिलाओं के इन अनुभवों और विचारों पर प्रकाश डालना है। हम चाहते हैं कि यह विचार बात-चीत और चर्चाओं, नीति मंडलों एवं लोकप्रिय मीडिया में सुने और जाने जाएँ। हमने इस प्रोजेक्ट की शुरुवात 2020 में की थी। कोविड-19 के चलते, हम ऑनलाइन (ज़ूम, वहाट्सएप आदि के ज़रिए) और व्यक्तिगत रूप (मास्क लगाकर और दूरी का ध्यान रखते हुए), दोनों से काम कर रहे हैं ताकि हम विभिन्न महिलाओं तक पहुँच सकें और उनकी कहानियाँ सामने ला सकें।
हमारा रिसर्च मुख्य रूप से इंग्लैंड के कैंब्रिज विश्वविद्यालय में आधारित है और इसकी फन्डिंग इकनॉमिक एण्ड सोशल रिसर्च काउन्सल (ESRC) द्वारा की गयी है। हमारी टीम के लोग विभिन्न क्षेत्रों से जुड़े हैं जैसे कि समाज-शास्त्र, मानवशास्त्र, इतिहास और फिल्म-मैकिंग। हम कैंब्रिज, ऑक्सफोर्ड, लंदन, कोलकाता, दिल्ली और गुड़गाँव जैसे अलग-अलग जगहों में स्तिथ हैं, और साथ मिलकर गुड़गाँव में महिलों के जीवन के बारे में जानने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं।
